The Northern Devon FLAG is a partnership of stakeholders that has come together to support
all aspects of the Northern Devon fisheries, including the fishing industry, marine environment, fishing heritage and culture and local seafood. It has been successful in securing £1.1m of funding from the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) and Marine Management Organisation (MMO)
to "support the sustainable development of fisheries areas" in the North Devon and Torridge districts. The programme provides advice, support and funding to local businesses,
communities and agencies, with a focus on the four main fishing communities of Appledore, Bideford, Clovelly and Ilfracombe.
Northern Devon’s commercial fisheries have faced many challenges in recent years and are set to face greater challenges in the future. It is the aim of the FLAG to support the fisheries sector and communities in meeting these challenges and to help the sector to remain active, competitive, recognised and supported within the area, and further afield, through a suite of local business and community led projects.
The FLAG has an independent chair and 24 members with representatives from the public, private, community and business sectors. The fisheries sector is represented by fishers, potters, processors, retailers and fisheries agencies. There are also representatives from the environment, tourism, community and food sectors.
The FLAG programme is operational from March 2012 to December 2015 - however, please note that the main programme is now closed to new funding applications.
The FLAG Partnership produced a Local Development Strategy and set of supporting Priorities based on the local needs and opportunities of the area, as assessed in 2011. The FLAG team is hosted by North Devon+ to provide financial, administrative and development services to ensure full commitment of the funds towards activities to meet the FLAG Development Strategy and Priorities.
Seafood & Festivals Project
The Seafood & Festivals project sits under the main FLAG programme, and has been set-up specifically to support smaller new activity that promotes or celebrates Northern Devon’s fish, seafood, marine environment or fishing heritage through sponsorship and support of:
1. Marketing activity or attendance of events across Northern Devon or beyond
2. Initiation of new local fish-related celebratory events or adding new elements
to existing events, particularly in Northern Devon’s key fishing communities
Support is open to businesses and organisations based in the North Devon and Torridge districts throughout 2014 and 2015, but please note that sponsorship is limited.
